Of course, we all want to do our bit to help the planet and reduce our own environmental impact as far as we can, but we also want to continue doing the things that we enjoy - which is why so many of us are now making sure we research brands and businesses to make sure they have strong sustainability standards in place before we spend any money with them.
It’s easier said than done sometimes, with many companies out there capitalising on this growing interest in all things eco-friendly to sell as much as they can, with greenwashing a very real problem across all industries and sectors, where businesses spend more time and money on making themselves look eco-conscious rather than actually being eco-conscious.
To help all you foodies out there who are keen to continue trying different menus on for size but who want to do so with sustainability in mind, we’ve put together a list of some of the most eco-friendly restaurants you can find around the world. Enjoy!
London
Head to the Big Smoke and you’ll find Silo, possibly the greenest food establishment you’ll find. Originally opened in Brighton in 2014 by Douglas McMaster, the site has now been moved to Hackney Wick in London and is now the world’s first zero waste restaurant.
It has its own flour mill and its own onsite brewery, they churn their own butter, make their own oat milk, roll their own oats, make sure that all products delivered come in reusable vessels like urns, pails or crates… it just goes on and on!
The furniture or fittings are upcycled over being recycled and made from materials that would have otherwise been wasted. The plates are made from plastic bags, the crockery from crushed wine bottles and the tables are made from reconstituted food packaging!
South Africa
Based in Cape Town, The Test Kitchen is one of the most celebrated dining experiences to be had in South Africa, run by chef Luke Dale-Roberts who’s renowned for prioritising sustainability when he cooks.
In 2018, he turned it into a Drought Kitchen pop-up, which basically eliminated the need for any dishwashing, as a way of highlighting the water crisis. Instead of using crockery, custom plates were made of disposable cards that were set into reusable picture frames to make each dish look like a painting.
Germany
Head to Berlin and you’ll find Good Bank, which is a vertical farm-to-table restaurant where all the veggies you eat are grown right there in the restaurant next to you. You’ll see rows upon rows of greenery lining the walls of the site, all the way up to the ceiling, but well protected behind glass doors.
Sit back and watch as your servers harvest your food right there before your very eyes, with the menu consisting of salad bowls, sandwiches and soups. You also don’t have to worry about pesticides as none of these are used and neither are any genetically modified seeds… so what you see is what you get!
